A church in some respects is just like any other small business, but with even more liabilities. It is wise for the leaders of a church to consider getting some church insurance to protect themselves in case something unexpected happens.
A church has people in and out of their doors all through the week, usually without any supervision or leader to ensure that they are handling church property, and themselves, in an intelligent manner. Any leadership that is present with these people is usually just a volunteer and has little authority to strictly enforce behavior or force people to leave if they are not using the church facilities in the prescribed fashion.
Also, because a church frequently allows other community or service non-profit groups to use their facilities, there can again be risk of damage by people who don’t understand how a particular piece of equipment works or fail to secure the building properly when they leave.
Another risk can be travelling, especially a church’s youth group. It is quite common for a church youth group to take a trip to a special conference or rally or camp. Of course, all of that travel should be insured so that if something dreadful happens with the vehicle or with the children, the church is not exposed to a lawsuit or to a large loss of already-scarce funding.
Church insurance is a wise investment for most churches and they should purchase a reputable policy through a company that is used to insuring churches for all of their different needs and can guide them to the most economical package for what sort of coverage they really should have.
